Using the chart
Each food has a row of six circles.
- First three count the tries: first, second, third.
- Last three are notes you tick whenever they apply: loved it, try again, reaction.
The dotted lines at the end of each section are for your own family foods.
A few rows after a couple of weeks:
| Food | ||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Filled = ticked. Egg is a firm favourite, salmon is on its second go, and lentils are marked to try again.
Tried
First taste. Even a lick counts.
Second try
Offer it again another day.
Third try
Familiar foods get accepted.
Loved it!
A keeper for the easy days.
Reaction
Stop that food. What to do
Try again
Some babies need 10+ tries.
Allergen
One of the 14 UK allergens.
Iron rich
Matters from around 6 months.
Reaction? What to do
- Stop offering the food straight away.
- Note the time and any symptoms. A photo of a rash helps.
- Tick the reaction circle on the chart.
- For a mild reaction, such as a few hives, speak to your GP or health visitor before offering it again, or call 111.
Not sure? NHS 111 can help, day or night.

Introducing allergens
The tracker in the bottom-left corner lists the allergens to introduce early:
- Introduce one allergen at a time, in a small amount, earlier in the day.
- Write the date, and tick No reaction once all is well.
- Keep in rotation: colour in one of the 7 week circles each week it's on the menu.
Delaying allergens is no longer recommended. Introducing them from around 6 months may lower the risk of allergy.
Safe food prep
Grapes: cut into quarters lengthways.
Cherries: remove the stone, then quarter.
Nuts: ground or smooth butter only, never whole under 5.
Fish: check carefully for bones.
Egg: cook until firm, unless British Lion stamped.
Cow's milk: fine in cooking, not as a main drink until 12 months.
Before 12 months: no honey, no added salt, no added sugar.
